•Art of the Zodiac: Celebrating the Year of the Horse
February 1 - March 1, 2002

This exhibit focuses on the spirit of the horse, as it is described in Chinese mythology and astrology. According to Chinese cultural tradition, horses are noble and diligent in character. People born in the year are said to be determined, outgoing, good-looking, cheerful, and at times a bit arrogant. Also explored in this exhibition is the ancient and intimate relationship between humans and horses. Over 70 pieces by 61 artists are featured in this exhibit. Media include bronze, tin, wood, lacquer ware, leather, porcelain, glass, stone and paper. With a variety of material and immense creativity, the participants have brought great vitality and variety to representations of the horse, both realistic and metaphorical. Many of the works in this exhibit utilize the horse-imagery and horse-related word-play prevalent in the Chinese language that employs puns to convey symbolic meaning.
