From Goddess to Pin Up: Icons of Femininity in Indian Calendar Art
October 4, 2001 - January 19, 2002
| Calendar, or "bazaar" art, is perhaps the most ubiquitous form of visual culture in contemporary India, gazing down upon millions of people from office and kitchen walls, to shop counters, motor vehicles, temples and roadsides. This exhibit is drawn from the collection of Indian calendar art that Professor J.P.S. Uberoi and Dr. Uberoi have put together over 30 years. The exhibit focuses on the representation of women in calendar art from the 1960s onwards. From the devotional and nationalistic to the glamorous pin-up and advertisement, the calendars reveal the ways that commercial, political, religious and social interests converge on images of the female body. | ||||

Painting Over the Lines: Five Contemporary Artists from Pakistan
February 13 - June 29, 2002
|
Until recently, the culture and politics of Pakistan have received sporadic attention on the world stage. But over the last year, the need to understand its contemporary conflicts, culture and history has acquired an unprecedented urgency. Featuring works by five artists trained at Lahore's National College of Arts, Hamra Abbas, Sylvat Aziz, Rashid Rana, Ali Raza, and Risham Syed, the exhibit provides a glimpse into the vital culture of a country in transition. Drawing from a wide range of materials, images, and practices from both Pakistan's cultural heritage and contemporary global art, the artists in this exhibition question pre-definitions imposed from within and without the nation. Through their works they offer new and critical ways to understand Pakistan's complex cultural landscape.
