•At Home and Abroad: Japan and Japonisme
July 27 - October 6, 2002

This exhibit presents an important turning-point in the history of European and American art when Japanese prints by artists like Hiroshige and Hokusai inspired Pierre Bonnard, Paul Gauguin, James Tissot, James McNeill Whistler, and Mary Cassatt, among other artists, to generate fresh modes of composition, new color preferences, and a strong sensibility toward linearity. This exhibit examines the impact of other Japanese commodities like ceramics, furniture, and textiles on the techniques and imagery found in late 19th- and early 20th-century prints and paintings.
