•Prints of Hawai'i: 1915-1941: The First Generation
March 14 - July 28, 2002

This exhibit surveys the diverse range of techniques, style, and approaches to printmaking practiced by some of Hawaii's finest artist working in the early decades of the twentieth century. Featured artists include Charles W. Bartlett, John Young, John Kelly, Isami Doi, D. Howard Hitchcock, Ben Norris, Arman T. Manookian, Elsie Das, and Juliette May Fraser, among many others.


•FounderÕs Eye: Textile Gifts from Anna Rice Cooke selected from the AcademyÕs Collection
April 14 - October 6, 2002

More than 20 examples of textiles collected by Anna Rice Cooke represent cultures of Japan, China, Central Asia, Europe, Hawaii and North America. Mrs. CookeÕs textile arts is the basis of the permanent textile collection which has now grown to more than 5,000 pieces from over 60 countries.


•Reclusion or Inclusion?: Chinese Paintings from the Transition, 1630-1682
May 2 - September 1, 2002

This group of 20 paintings on loan from the privately held Guan Lu Yuan collection ably demonstrates the paintersÕ reactions from both sides of the transition. Artists whose loyalty was squarely tied to the late Ming dynasty were challenged to either adapt to the new order imposed by the Manchus (Qing) or remove themselves from public life and into reclusion. Some of the artists whose works are shown here made an alternative decision to fight, and these unfortunates are among loyalists who were executed by the new order. This exhibit explores comparisons between porcelain manufacturers and developing trends in important painting circles of Nanjing and beyond.


•Treasures from an Unknown Reign: Shunzi Porcelain
May 2 - September 1, 2002

This traveling exhibit of some 90 ceramics documents the beauty and diversity of the porcelain produced during the reign of Shunzi, the boy sovereign and first Qing emperor of China. New ceramics shapes and styles of painting characteristic of this period will be identified. Catalogue available.

•Artists of Hawai'i 2002

The 52nd annual Artists of Hawai'i 2002 exhibit represents an important state-wide event that is designed to highlight the best work of Hawai'i's artistic community. The multi-media exhibit juried by a leading member of the nation's art community, is the oldest annual juried exhibit in the state.


•Barriers Therein Passages: Recent Work by Yida Wang (New Title 1/9/02)
June 27 - August 25, 2002

Born and raised in Shanghai in 1957, Wang is a 1984 graduate of the Shanghai Light Industry College. She moved to Hawaii in 1986 to study at the University of Hawaii at Manoa where she earned an MFA degree in 1994. A lecturer of art there since 1995, she teaches classes in drawing and painting. Wang is celebrated for her rich charcoal or graphite drawings and oil paintings. Recently, she has received recognition for her mixed-media constructions. Her work is often distinguished by a mysteriously expressive and dreamlike quality. In the past decade, Wang's work has received various awards and honors.


•Ansel Adams in Hawai'i

The Academy's exhibit will bring together and present to the pubic for the first time a selection of vintage and modern prints of Hawaii by Adams. The exhibit will feature prints from the collections of the HAA and other organizations. The prints, including stunning images of Hawaii's untouched landscapes; its thriving urban environment; its commercial, agricultural, ranching, industrial, and military activities; its historic and cultural resources; and its diverse population, will not only reflect the land, face, and spirit of Hawaii at mid-20th century, it will showcase the dramatic beauty, technical excellence, and expressive power of Adam's work.

•Japanese Chamber of Commerce Exhibition

This exhibition is sponsored by the Japanese Chamber of Commerce.


•Sacred Treasures of Mount Koya: The Art of Japanese Shingon Buddhism
September 1 - November 10, 2002

The exhibit consists of 91 examples of paintings, sculptures, textiles, and printed works dating from the Heian Period to the Showa Period demonstrating the rich aesthetic and cultural legacy of JapanÕs Shingon Buddhist tradition. As the introduction to the exhibit, a recreation of a Shingon Buddhist altar will help visitors understand the setting and the ritual implements employed in Japanese Shingon practice. An international symposium, Matrices and Weavings: Expressions of Shingon Buddhism in Japanese Culture and Society, is being sponsored by UH in conjunction with the exhibit.

•The Art of Mu Xin: Landscape Paintings and Prison Notes
October 3 - December 1, 2002

This exhibit features 33 works by Chinese artist-writer, Mu Xin. The landscape paintings and prison notes are the only surviving works of the artists that predate his emigration to the United States in 1982. These prison notes, written on paper supplied to him for self-criticism and secreted in the lining of his clothing, had miraculously survived his earlier period of imprisonment. The landscapes are executed in ink and gouaches on sturdy Western watercolor papers. Created in the aftermath of the Cultural Revolution while he was under house arrest, the works are a testimony to the life of the mind and the will to survive through art. Catalogue available.


•Hawaii Craftsmen Exhibition
October 9 - October 31, 2002

Hosted by Hawaii Craftsmen this annual juried show features the best works by regional contemporary artists.


•Doris Duke Islamic Gallery
Permanent (Opens October 31, 2002)

From the estate of American heiress, Doris Duke, a magnificent collection of Islamic art including ceramic tiles, textiles, paintings, and jewelry will be installed along with works from the AcademyÕs permanent collection. This gallery will serve as the orientation center for tours to Shangri La, Doris DukeÕs exclusive Black Point estate.

This bazaar features gift items from around the world. Crafts, jewelry, basketry, textiles and holiday items from Indonesia, Russia, China, Japan, Africa, Samoa, and other countries.


•Masterpieces of Chinese Lacquer
December 18, 2002 - April 27, 2003

A selection of Chinese lacquer pieces from the Mike Healy Collection, this exhibit will feature examples of Chinese lacquer from the Song through the Ming period.


•GrandfatherÕs House: A ChildrenÕs Exhibition On Korea
January 15 - December 31, 2003

This child-friendly exhibit features a simulated Korean village home with furnishings typical of a Korean home during grandfatherÕs times. Visitors entering the rooms of the house will experience a kitchen, menÕs quarters (saranbang) and womenÕs quarters (anbang). Children are encouraged to step into the rooms of the house and try on traditional Korean clothing, look at Korean childrenÕs books and play the popular family game of yut with toss sticks and playing pieces.


•Korean Centennial Exhibition
October TBA, 2003

An exhibit of approximately 60 works of art representing the finest of Korean textiles from the largest private collection in the world now housed at the Museum of Korean Embroidery in Seoul. The exhibit will highlight textiles that were part of every day life of a hundred years ago. It will be held in conjunction with a statewide celebration of Korean arts and culture marking the arrival of Korean immigrants to Hawaii in 1903.

•Honolulu Printmakers: A 75th Anniversary Celebration

In recognition of 75 years of printmaking excellence and cultural leadership, the Academy will present this exhibit. The list of artists who have created the gift prints provide a veritable history of the best of HawaiiÕs print artists. The gift prints showcase the work of the Printmakers' founding members as well as other important artists such Satoru Abe, Allyn Bromley, Jean Charlot, Isami Doi, Joseph Feher, Cornelia Macintyre Foley, Juliette May Fraser, Sueko Kimura, Hiroki Morinoue, Marcia Morse, Ben Norris, Louis Pohl, Laura Smith, Madge Tennent, Dodie Warren, Cora Yee, and John Young to name but a few. The gift prints are remarkable for their display of different printmaking techniques, a diverse spectrum of subject, changing styles, and a broad conceptual range. The gift prints provide the background against which the Honolulu Printmakers continues to thrive.
