Ancient Japanese Writing Symbols: From the Golden Stamp to Documents from the Shoso-in

| This exhibit focuses on reproductions of about 100 scrolls of the Shoso-in documents, artifacts from archeological digs such as letters on lacquer lid paper, wooden tablets, and earthenware with ink writings from around the country, and also epigraphs and materials related to writing as such as implements. Also included are ancient written materials from China and Korea to recreate the world of writing in ancient Japan. | ||||

Male and Female Accessories: Techniquesa and Designs from the Edo And Meiji Periods

| This exhibit takes a close look at the world of Japanese adornments while explicating the roles and characteristics of accessories such as bags and pouches, seal cases, and hair ornaments that were used during the Edo period through to the Meiji period - during which time the kimono came to be first recognized as Japan's traditional form of dress. On display are approximately 80 items of garments and hair ornaments worn by the nobility from the latter part of the Meiji period, such as by members of the family of Prince Arisugawa. | ||||
