| Charm of Joseon Dynasty Wooden Furniture
May 31 - September 1, 2002 | ||||
| This exhibit displays a broad range of Joseon Dynasty wooden furniture from national, public and university museums, as well as from private art museums and private collections. Joseon Dynasty wooden furniture offered a number of special features, not the least of which was the maximum utilization of the natural environment as applied to furniture. This was done to meet the distinct needs of the traditional Korean lifestyle and in this process, there evolved a distinctly Korean furniture flavor. Traditional furniture can be classified by functional type and room placement, including master's room, lady's room, kitchen, and other furniture. In addition, Korean furniture was produced for floor-based living, since the traditional Korean home featured an ondol, or hypocaust radiant heating system. Consequently, much of the furniture was built to be cozy, convenient, and unpretentious. | ||||
