• Katsushika Hokusai from the Collection of Nagase Takeshiro
February 1 - February 26, 2004

The Nagase Takeshiro collection consists of about 600 ukiyo-e works donated by the late Mr. Nagase in 1978. Collected during his stay in Paris, they contain about seventy works by Hokusai. These include rare yakusha-e (portraits of actors) of Hokusai’s early years when he used the name of Shunro, some works produced under the name of Sori, a set of “Fifty-three Stations on Tokaido” that focuses on travelers and gives a vivid description of the regions, and bird's-eye pictures drawn by Hokusai in his original perspective.

• Utagawa Hiroshige: the World of Flowers, Birds, Fish and Seashells
March 2 – March 26, 2004

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) left many great landscapes such as "Fifty-three Stations of Tokaido" and he is well-known as a landscape artist representative of Ukiyo-e. On the other hand, he drew a few hundred of pictures of flowers, birds, fish and sea shells and he is a prominent figure among Ukiyo-e artists both in quality and quantity.

This exhibition shows about 80 works selected from our collection of Hiroshige. Owing to Hiroshige's vivid expression and poems attached to the images, you may be able to imagine the flaps of birds' wings and the rustle of trees and flowers. At the same time, famous "The Fish Series", splendid scenary paintings of four seasons, print books and sketches are also displayed.
