RARE 7th CENTURY BUDDHA ACQUIRED
The V&A and the British Museum have joined together to acquire a rare Indian 7th century metal statue of a standing figure of the Buddha Sakyamuni, the first to enter a public European collection. The exquisite gold-toned figure, 14 inches high, depicts the Buddha in the late Gupta period. The Buddha is represented with his hand raised, in the gesture of fearlessness and reassurance, affirming his role as protector. The hair curls, skull protuberance and webbed fingers are auspicious marks, symbolic of his attainment of enlightenment. The Buddha will be on display at the V&A for another two months. It will then be displayed in Birmingham, Bradford, Leicester and Exeter as the centerpiece of a loan exhibition of Indian Buddhist sculpture.

Dr. Fan Ka-wai and Celine Y.Y. Lai, researchers in the Chinese Civilization Center at the City University of Hong Kong, have compiled a valuable resource for those interested in utilizing the internet to research topics in the field of Chinese archaeology. Given the frequency with which new archaeological discoveries have been made in China in recent decades, it is a challenge for researchers to keep abreast of the latest developments in the field. Our colleagues in Hong Kong have addressed this age-old problem with modern technology. Scouring the internet, they have compiled and reviewed over fifty websites, separating them into the following categories: Integrated Websites, Prehistoric Culture, Yin-Shang Archaeology, Bamboo and Silk Research, and Silk Road. Our sincere thanks goes out to Fan and Lai for their work on this project. For our readers’ convenience, links to the websites, along with the authors’ accompanying text and annotations, have been placed under “Research Tools” on our Newsletter homepage.
