HA 394.102 The Italian Avant-Garde: from This course offers students interested in 20th century culture the opportunity to study the relationship between two phases of avant-garde activity in Italy: modernism and Futurism (1900-1925), on the one hand, and the revival of radical avant-garde activity after the fall of Fascism (1945-1970), on the other. In discussion, we will take up questions such as: What was Italian Futurism and who were its primary promoters? What differences exist between Futurist works of art and those produced by the radical avant-garde after the Second World War? While providing answers to these questions, The Italian Avant-Garde: from Futurism to Arte Povera offers students a broad introduction to twentieth-century Italian art. It will cover works produced from 1890 to 1970. We will begin the course with a close look at the art of Medardo Rosso, the Futurists, and Italys Fascist period. We will conclude the course with an examination of avant-garde art in the 1950s and 1960s with a focus on Arte Povera. Students will be required to give presentations on assigned readings and complete a take-home mid-term, which will cover art production up to the Fascist period. At the end of the term, each student will write an essay on an Italian artist working in the 20th century. (Bennett) |
