Scholarly interests include 19th- and 20th- century art, particularly modernist painting in France after 1848, with a special focus on avant-garde and bohemian culture in fin-de-siecle Paris and the production of "popular" mythologies in and around Montmartre's notorious entertainment industry. Publications include the forthcoming "Reflecs d'un Gnaiff: Images of Insurrection in Emile Pouget's Le Pere Peinard," and a forthcoming book on montmartrois art and popular culture in the 1880s and 1890s.
