Associate Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art, Department of the History of Art and the Residential College. Scholarly interests include aesthetic theory, methodologies of interpretation, 20th-century art, and popular culture, with special focus on the art and culture of Germany and the United States. Publications include "Allegorical Modernism: Carl Einstein on Otto Dix" (2000), "Anselm Kiefer and the Philosophy of Martin Heidegger" (1998; paperback edition: 2000), "The New Man as Cyborg: Figures of Technology in Weimar Visual Culture" (1994), and "Art Criticism and Deconstruction: Rosalind Krauss and Jacques Derrida" (1990). Professor Biro's current research is on the figure of the cyborg in dada art.
