Scholarly interests include modern French painting and graphics, as well as critical approaches to popular, bohemian, and avant-garde cultural forms.  Publications include "Réflecs d'un Gniaff: On Emile Pouget and Le Père Peinard" (1999); "Pictorial Acrobatics" (2001); and "Beau geste: On the Readability of Terrorism" (2002).  A book on painting and oppositionality in fin-de-siècle Montmartre, Codes of Misconduct, is forthcoming from Yale University Press (2004).
