How to find an interesting book

There are several ways to set about finding an interesting book for your book report. However, before trying any of the ways, you need give some thought to topics that interest you. Are you interested in a particular area of science or technology? Are you more interested in politics and scientific ideas? Would you perhaps like to read about women in science? or the impact of technology on society? If you begin with some topics in mind, it will be easier to find a book that is interesting to you. Then try the following:

1. Trip to Borders (or any of the used books stores in town). Borders (and most of the used books stores) has a science-technology section, a health section (covers medicine), and an environmental section. Spend a few minutes browsing. Read the brief descriptions and maybe a few pages of the introduction or opening chapter. Just keep in mind, the books needs to a) cover modern science and/or technology, b) cover something other than science and technology, and c) have some reference to the sources used--either footnotes or a bibliographic discussion.

2. Spend some time with Mirlyn, probably beginning with a keyword search. The following keyword searches turned up a number of books that would fulfill the book report requirement:

  • DNA history
  • Genetics history
  • space race moon
  • eniacd
  • When you find a title that looks interesting, click and call up the full description. If there are more books on a similar topic, the subject headings will be hyperlinked. Click the link relating to history and see what comes up.

    3. If you would rather browse the books in the library rather than the catalogue, check out the call number of a few books that look interesting and go to that section of the library. You should probably begin with the Shapiro Library, since the collection there is geared for undergraduates. QH will get you to books on the history of RDNA research.

Good luck, and remember, if you get stuck with a boring book, you chose it. Find something that is interesting.
