Q: What is HPM?

A: We’re a group of upperclassmen Honors students that want to help freshmen Honors students.

Q: So how does it work?

A: Mentees in groups of 5-7 are paired with a mentor of similar academic and social interests. Housing location is also taken into account--you will most likely be paired with other mentees who live in your building.

Q: How often do I have to meet with my mentor?

A: Mentorship groups meet at least every other week for the Fall semester. Additionally, there are special events planned by Academics or Activities committees that all mentors and mentees are invited to attend. These may count as a mentorship meeting.

Q: Why should I join HPM?

A: Our mentors have been in your shoes! They know what it’s like to have questions about all the new things you need to absorb on campus. Our mentors can give you advice on course selection, pre-professional tracks, Honors requirements, general requirements, study abroad programs, Honors and Off-campus housing, Greek life, and everything else that goes on here at the U of M. We can and want to help. Additionally, you will have a group of other incoming students around you who will more than likely be in some of your classes. It's a great way to meet other students!

Q: What if my mentor isn’t helping me that much?

A: We strongly encourage mentees to keep in touch with the program. If you are not satisfied with the help you are receiving, there are a number of things that can be done. We ask that mentees specify what they’re looking for in a mentor (e.g. someone pursuing a Biology concentration, and is pre-Med) and so mentor-mentee matchups usually work out well. If your mentor isn’t, in fact, being helpful, then we will be more than glad to set you up with another mentor.
