"HUMAN RIGHTS IN CRISIS" CONFERENCE 2009

[4pm] Conference Introduction

[5pm] Monique Harden, Founder and Director of Environmental Advocates for Human Rights will speak on her legal and public advocacy work with and on behalf of survivors of Hurricane Katrina. She will also be addressing how to use international treaties and rights (ie right to return) in domestic crisis situations.

[630pm] Art Lounge afterglow--snacks and refreshments will be provided!

[9am] Breakfast

[10am] University Professor Howard Stein (CAAS) will be presenting on developmental economics in African in relation to torture and other humanitarian issues.

[11am] Douglass Cassel, Professor of Law and Director of the Center for Civil and Human Rights at Notre Dame, presenting on legal methods of justice and reconciliation in war-torn societies.

[12pm] Lunch

[1pm] Valerie Kaur, Director and Creator of documentary film "Divided We Fall," will be presenting on her film and it's focus on racism, violence, and forgiveness in America post September 11th.

[2pm] Susannah Sirkin, Deputy Director of Physicians for Human Rights will be speaking on her work in crisis zones such as Zimbabwe, Rwanda, and Kosovo.

[3pm] Svarngai Sandi will be speaking on her work as an activist in Zimbabwe.

[4pm] Closing remarks

 

Prof. Howard Stein (CAAS) will speak on Saturday, February 7th at the Michigan Union.
