Features
IGSA listserv has a lot of
features.
Most list operations are
explained below. Here is just
about everything you will need
to know:
Almost everything that you might
need to do on the server is most
easily and effectively performed
via the
Web page for this list. Log
in using your email address (UMICH
address for UM affiliates). You
can create a password after
logging in for the first time.
DO NOT use your UMICH (Kerberos)
password as your listserv
password. Listserv passwords are
sent across networks as clear
text and do not use Kerberos
security. At the
following page, you can read or
post messages (an alternative to
your email software), adjust
your settings, or unsubscribe.
When you change your settings,
make sure you click the "Save"
button at the bottom of the
page.
If you do not have Web access,
here are some key commands. In
all cases, the default server
address is
iranian-grads-request@umich.edu.
Other addresses are shown where
appropriate. Note that commands
may be placed in either the
SUBJECT line or the BODY of the
message:
subscribe your_name
(Please use your first and last
names here.)
SETTING MEMBERSHIP TO DIGEST
MODE:
set digest
("Digest" mode means that you
will get one mailing per day
consisting of the last 24 hours
of postings.)
SETTING MEMBERSHIP TO INDEX
MODE:
set index
("Index"
mode is a once-a-day mailing of
the SUBJECT lines of the
postings of the last 24 hours,
with instructions about
retrieving those postings that
are of interest to you.)
SETTING MEMBERSHIP TO DISCUSSION
MODE:
set mail
(This switches from either
Digest or Index mode to regular"
status--postings will be
delivered to you when they are
posted.)
TEMPORARILY SUSPENDING MAIL FROM
THE LIST:
set nomail
("NoMail" is the option to stop
mail until you send a command to
resume mail delivery from this
list. This is a very good thing
to do when you go on vacation,
as it will keep your mailbox
from filling up. Note that on
many lists if your mailbox fills
up and creates error mail back
to the list, your subscription
will be automatically
terminated.)
RESUMING MAIL FROM THE LIST:
(command depends on your
preferred mode)
set index
(Any of these commands will undo
the "NoMail" option.)
set ack
(This sets an option to have a
confirmation message sent to you
when your posts are distributed.
This is usually not set when you
first subscribe to the list.)
set noack
(No
confirmation message when posts
are distributed.)
DETERMINING YOUR MEMBERSHIP
SETTINGS:
review
(This returns some general
information about the list as
well as the members listing.)
CHANGING YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS: if
your email address is about to
change send a message to
iranian-grads-request@umich.edu
from your CURRENT email address,
with the following as the body
of the message:
set email=[new-email-address],
substituting your new email
address (don't use the
brackets!) You should receive
confirmation by return mail.
PLEASE DO THIS WHILE YOU
HAVE ACCESS TO YOUR OLD ACCOUNT.
ARCHIVES: The archives for this
list are available at its Web
page. Note that viewing list
archives is generally restricted
to those who are subscribed to
the list.
