A member of the Polish United Workers' Party (PZPR) from 1959 to 1990,
Stanislaw Ciosek (b. 1939) has held a variety of administrative posts. He
was awarded a degree in oceanic studies from the College of Economics at
Sopot in 1961 and served for the next fourteen years in the administration
of the Union of Polish Students. From 1972 to 1985 Ciosek was a Deputy to
the Sejm, and from 1975 to 1980 he was a regional First Secretary in the
PZPR. He was on the PZPR's Central Committee from 1980 to 1981 and 1986 to
1990; from 1980 to 1985 he was a member of the Council of Ministers. In
the years leading to the Round Table negotiations (1986-88), he was
General Secretary of the PZPR's Central Committee and General Secretary of
the National Council of the Patriotic Movement for National Rebirth. From
1990 to 1996, Ciosek was Poland's Ambassador to Moscow.
