Responsibility for the management of the Center lies with the Director, who reports to the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. The Center's Director is Professor Kevin Gaines.

Professor Gaines is a Professor in CAAS and the Department of History. He is author of Uplifting the Race: Black Leadership, Politics, and Culture in the Twentieth Century and more recently, American Africans in Ghana: Black Expatriates in the Civil Rights Era. Professor Gaines is a past winner of the John Hope Franklin Book Prize of the American Studies Association and has received fellowships from the National Humanities Center , and the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences.

An Executive Committee helps manage CAAS. The CAAS Executive Committee is drawn from the group of faculty with full- or partial appointments in the Center. In addition to the Executive Committee, several Steering Committees help manage the Center's programs.
