Course Name(s): Introduction to Africa and Its Diaspora

This course introduces students to the study of Africa and its Diaspora in the Americas and West Indies, as well as Europe. The course takes a multimedia, interdisciplinary approach to a range of historical, literary, artistic, religious, economic, and political questions crucial to the understanding of the experiences of people of African descent. Using maps, films, the visual arts, music, important historical texts, and short stories, the course will focus on four major themes: 1) migration and the middle passage; 2) slavery and resistance; 3) segregation and freedom movements; and 4) the arts and global black consciousness. Prerequisite to the CAAS concentration and minor suitable for interested nonconcentrators.

Description of Duties: GSIs who are appointed to this position are expected to attend all lectures and all of their assigned discussion sections, be at lectures and their discussion sections on time, be prepared (complete the readings and have plans/ideas for how they will run discussion sections) for weekly planning meetings and discussion sections, and complete assigned tasks on time. Grading should be completed as per the times specified on the syllabus. GSIs are expected to grade materials and provide feedback to students in a timely manner. GSIs are also expected to be at the location specified for office hours on time and for the duration of office hours. If GSIs have to set up equipment, etc. for lectures or their own discussion sections, they are expected to do early enough so that lectures/discussions can begin on time. GSIs are expected to keep good attendance records (for lectures, discussion sections and office hours) and a careful record of students’ grades. All GSIs must be ready to assume their responsibilities in the course beginning September 2, 2008.

Estimated FTE: Three positions with .50 fraction
Min Qualifications: Prior CAAS courses (Good grades in these courses are expected). Good writing style. Ability to analyze readings well. Ability to work well with students from many racial and ethnic backgrounds.

Selection Process: The candidates will be selected by the course instructor and final approval will run through the CAAS Executive Committee.
