Outside Fellowships & Grants
A good proposal, strong record, and careful planning are the keys to winning fellowship and research support.  The University has many sources of help for those interested in the "how to's" of proposal drafting. Two especially useful sources are the collection of documents maintained by the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) and the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) Proposal Writer's Guide

University of Michigan students and scholars receive the major part of their research funding from national sources.  There are several useful general guides for learning about resources.  Below are some useful sources of information.

Research funding for work in Africa comes mainly from the Fulbright Fellowships Program, Social Science Research Council (SSRC), and the National Science Foundation. In addition, individual faculty members and students have recently held grants from the Werner-Gren Foundation, The Spencer Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, the U.S. Aeronautics and Space Administration, the Institute for the Study of World Peace, and the United States Institute for Peace.
