CAAS Outreach Programs

A public university has a special obligation to support outreach functions. Currently, CAAS staff and faculty host a variety of outreach activities.

Annual Africa Workshop for Teachers

In cooperation with other foreign area centers, CAAS holds an annual Saturday workshop for middle school teachers and high school teachers. Elementary school and community college instructors have also found the workshops useful.

Local School and Library Visits

CAAS and SAIO Program Associate, Elizabeth James, is a frequent visitor to local schools and libraries. A third-generation story-teller, she introduces children to African American, Afro-Caribbean, and African life through folktales, internet activities, and short presentations.

In conjunction with the King/Chavez/Parks program at the University, CAAS has also helped sponsor poetry readings and story-telling by distinguished guests at local schools and libraries.

CAAS Kwanzaa Bazaar

The entire local community is invited to a festival of food, music, and treasures, in order to celebrate the Seven Principles for which this holiday stands. See our Events page in December for this year's date.
