Race the Dragon on the Huron River

We are writing you today to tell you of an exciting opportunity to be a part of a spectacular kick-off event planned for the LSA Theme Year, ChinaNow: a contemporary exploration. September 30th, on the banks of the Huron River, we will host a major Dragon Boat Race – the second most popular water sport in the world! This student focused event will bring at least 20 teams of 20 students together for a cultural experience they will never forget. This green event will be accompanied by a drum and gong procession, food, traditional Chinese kite-making and flying using recycled materials, performances by UM student group Groove, calligraphy, yo-yoing, and of course, the thrill of the race – this will be an event to remember! We intend to take full advantage of the opportunities the dragon boat festival provides to raise awareness of critical water issues and inter-dependent global environmental issues.

How can you get involved?

We are looking for student organization co-sponsors to help this event become a reality. For a financial contribution of almost any size, you will be able to support your students on a boating team, have your student organization's name and logo prominently displayed on all advertising materials and day-of signage, promote your student organizations programs and events, select a traditional Chinese team face (that each team member can have painted on), and participate in a cultural event not seen on this scale in Ann Arbor.

Even if your student organization is unable to support the event financially, you may also help by organizing and registering a team, providing advertising support and event volunteers. You may also take advantage of the opportunities that fielding a boat may offer for organizational fundraising (ask us how!). But we encourage you to consider joining the LSA Student Government, the Michigan Student Assembly, the Center for Chinese Studies, Arts at Michigan, the LSA Dean's Office and Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs as a full co-sponsor of what we hope will be one of the premier student events of the China theme year.

Let us know how you might like to help by contacting Summer Tucker @ 734-647-1487 or the Center for Chinese Studies at (734) 764-6308.

We look forward to hearing from you!
