Mark West was appointed Director
in July 2003. The Nippon Life Professor of Law, he received his JD
with multiple honors from Columbia University School of Law. Professor
West's current research focuses on two issues: the role of law in everyday
life in Japan, and the effects of institutions and institutional change
in Japanese corporate life and related areas.

Hitomi Tonomura was appointed
Director of Graduate Studies in 2006. Professor Tonomura is an Associate Professor of History and Women's Studies and a former CJS Director. Her current role at CJS includes advising Japanese Studies MA students. Professor
Tonomura received her PhD from Stanford University.

Program Associate, Jane Ozanich, directs, plans, and organizes all of the center’s
lecture series, film series, conferences, and special events. She is
the Editor of the Center’s newsletter and the Webmaster of this
site. Jane has an MA in TESOL and has lived and worked in Japan.

Yuri Fukazawa, Administrator,
is responsible for “people, rules, and money” at CJS. She
manages the Center’s finances and human resources. A transplant
from Japan, she also handles the Center's Japanese-language communication.

Student Services Coordinator Azumi Ann Takata, has worked at the University of Michigan since 1994. Her responsibilities include admissions, fellowships, academic advising, career counseling, and anything else related to student life. Ann holds a PhD in sociology and an AM in East Asian studies from Stanford University. Born in Japan and raised in California, Ann is bilingual bicultural and also works as a translator and interpreter.

Outreach Coordinator Guven Witteveen serves K-12 teachers, as well as community colleges and other higher educational partners. Conducting outreach to leaders in the community, business and government is another area of effort. With a PhD in anthropology, his special interests include cross-cultural comparison, and the ways that language and culture shape one's view of the world.

Sandra Morawski, Office Assistant,
joined the CJS staff in January 2003. She began her career at the University
of Michigan at the Institute for Social Research. Her
key responsibility is to support the Center’s overall office operations.
Other responsibilities include supervision of the student assistants,
database management, and accounting related tasks.

CJS Publications in the summer of 2004. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of History and in the Women's Studies Program.

Bruce Willoughby, Executive
Editor of the Publications Program, has worked at the Center for nearly 25 years. He lives out in the country with his wife, Tracy, eight Newfoundlands,
four Shih Tzus, two cats, and a number of Eastern Bluebirds.
