The Center for Japanese Studies provides summer and
academic year fellowships on a competitive basis to University of Michigan
PhD, CJS MA, MA/MBA, MA/JD and Professional School students whose studies
focus on Japan. Applicants must be admitted by a UM graduate degree
program to be considered for Center funding. Prospective students should submit a funding application at the same time as their admission application. Endowment Fellowships are
funded from the Center's endowment funds and are made possible by generous
donations. Fellowship awards vary in size but can range from several
hundred dollars to full tuition and stipend, depending on the applicants'
merit and annual funds availability. CJS offers the following student funding opportunities: CJS Alumni Fund Fellowship For information on how to apply, see Funding Application Procedure. CJS also provides travel support to UM Graduate students specializing in Japanese area studies attending academic meetings in the United States or overseas to give papers, chair panels, act as discussants, or serve in an executive capacity. For information on how to apply, see Conference Travel Support Application Procedure. Grant-in-Aid of $5,000, contributed by the UM Alumni Club of Japan. Eligibility: Native of Japan or UM student who is traveling to Japan for special study or research. CJS MA Program student. *Note: Eligibility requirements are determined by the funding institution. Grant-in-Aid (not tuition), awarded on merit basis to any student specializing in Japan for academic year or summer. Amount of award may vary. Eligibility: UM graduate student, specializing in Japan. No restriction on citizenship or residence status. ITO Foundation for International Education Exchange Scholarship The ITO Foundation awards scholarships in order to promote mutual understanding between Japan and other nations and to nurture people who can make a positive contribution to the world. The scholarship includes a living allowance of 180,000 yen per month, tuition of the actual amount (not to exceed 2,000,000 yen per academic year) and travel expenses (actual amount, not to exceed the limit for each fiscal year). The ITO Scholarship has its own application form, which will be available from CJS in December annually. For 2007, the deadline for returning the application is January 15, 2007. More information can be found on the ITO foundation website. Eligibility: UM student: MA, PhD or graduating senior. U.S. citizen. Recommended by CJS Fellowship Committee. Excellent academic record. Some knowledge of Japanese. Not presently residing in Japan. *Note: Eligibility requirements are determined by the funding institution. To be considered for all CJS funding (except the ITO award), applicants must complete a CJS Fellowship Application Packet. Fellowship application packet for Summer 2008 and Academic Year 2008-09 will be available for download in late September 2007. The deadline for application is February 1, annually, for following summer and academic year semesters. The materials that need to be submitted depends on your UM student status. Please note that your online application to Rackham School of Graduate Studies, including your application form, academic statement of purpose, personal statement, letters of recommendation, official transcripts, and test scores will be incorporated into your evaluation file. You do not need to submit a separate statement of purpose or academic letters of recommendation in addition to those included in the Rackham online application. If you have previously applied to CJS for funding, please contact the Student Services Coordinator to see what materials are already on file. Letters of recommendation and CVs should not be more than one year old. Some materials may also be forwarded from your home department. Please contact your department to see which items may be forwarded on your behalf. Student Services Coordinator
Eligibility: UM graduate students specializing in Japanese studies attending academic meetings in the Deadlines: November 30, January 31, March 31, annually This funding program will provide support for transportation and lodging expenses and be awarded only in cases where other sources of funding are exhausted or inadequate. Applicants, if they have not already done so, are required to apply to Rackham, International Institute, and their respective departments or professional schools for travel funds before applying to the Center. The funds will be paid as reimbursements of expenses in compliance with the University and International Institute's travel guidelines. Candidates must secure approval prior to travel. Domestic Travel: The limit is $350 per person per conference. As a rule, the Center will support one instance of domestic travel per applicant per year. A second request will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Foreign Travel: Requests for foreign travel support will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The Center strongly encourages students to secure support from Rackham as well. A letter from the applicant's advisor is required for travel for professional development purposes as well as foreign travel.
