Tiraz
Early Fatimid, probably 11th century. Embroidered in satin
stitch with a Kufic inscription.
The inscription on this fragment can be compared to those on two shirts
which have survived complete and which are both Fatimid in date. One is
in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, the other in the al-Sabah Collection Kuwait.
The Oxford shirt has been carbon-dated to the 11th century. Both items are
inscribed with a formulaic benedictory inscription in monumental plain Kufic
letters, as is the case here.
