UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN CENTER FOR EUROPEAN STUDIES
CALL FOR PROPOSALS ON EUROPE FOR 2006-07

The Center for European Studies (CES) invites U-M faculty to submit proposals from $250-$2,000 for individual, departmental, or collaborative programs focusing on Europe . We welcome innovative projects that promote research and teaching on Europe in the humanities and social sciences. Priority will be given to projects that involve graduate or undergraduate students. Projects may include (but are not limited to) collaborative research projects, seminars or conferences, invitations to distinguished visitors, and special events including artists or a film series.

Requests should include:

  • a short description of the project or event;
  • project budget with cost-sharing sources indicated;
  • a list of faculty or departmental collaborators.

Deadlines for submission of applications:
November 15, 2006 (Winter) if CES-EUC administrative support is requested and sponsor would like inclusion in CES-EUC printed publicity;
September 1, 2006 (Fall) and January 1, 2007 (Winter) for funding and co-sponsorship requests only (funds will be transferred to the department or school that will be providing administrative support for the program).

JEAN MONNET GRADUATE FELLOWSHIPS FOR RESEARCH ON ISSUES OF EUROPEAN INTEGRATION
CALL FOR PROPOSALS
DEADLINE: December 1, 2006


With a grant from the European Commission, the European Union Center and the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies are offering students summer grants of $5,000 to work on issues of European integration. Student grantees would conduct research and write a paper resulting from this research on a relevant topic of their choosing.

It is expected that during spring and/or summer of 2007, the grantees will devote twelve weeks of full time work on this project with a faculty advisor. Recipients may be invited to participate in selected outreach activities organized by the European Union Center with local high schools, colleges and universities. N.B. This is not a travel grant.

Students in professional schools and graduate programs are eligible to apply. Applicants should submit 2-3 page proposals that describe the project to be carried out, including its topic, aims, method, and anticipated scholarly contribution. They should indicate the dates they would be devoting themselves full time to this project. A letter of recommendation from a University of Michigan faculty member (preferably the student's advisor), most recent transcript, and a CV should accompany the proposal.

News from the Presidency
The Presidency of the Council of the European Union is rotated amongst the EU member states and changes every six months. Finland holds presidency from July 1 to December 31, 2006. Germany will hold presidency from January 1 to June 30, 2007.

Cultural Capital of Europe 2006: Patras, Greece.
The Cultural Capitals of Europe were created by the Minister of Culture of the European Community.
Athens became the first Cultural Capital of Europe in 1985. The event was conceived in order to help bring together different cultures.

The 2006 is the year that world celebrates 250th birthday of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart on January 27th, 150th birthdays of Sigmund Freud on May 6th and Nikola Tesla on July 10th, and 400th birthday of Rembrandt van Rijn.
