The European Union Center at U-M's International Institute is the recipient of a European Commission grant establishing it as a European Union Center of Excellence. The award of 299,170 Euro will support programming and research for three years, beginning in September 2005.

The European Union Center of Excellence at the University of Michigan (EUC-MI) is a multi-disciplinary research, education, and outreach program that improves the understanding of modern, integrated Europe at U-M, Southeastern Michigan, the Midwest, and in the United States.
The U-M is renowned for its professional schools, humanities and social science departments, interdisciplinary social science research, teaching, and community outreach. The establishment of EUC-MI in 2001 positioned U-M as one of the premier places to study and learn about modern Europe, Central and Eastern Europe, and the European Union and the new EU Center of Excellence in the United States will enhance that capacity substantially.

EUC-MI will partner with many units on campus, EU Centers across the U.S. , and universities in the European Union, with a collection of activities that advance the priorities of the European Commission to broaden awareness and strengthen knowledge about the European Union in the United States.

Over the next three years, EUC-MI will partner directly with the following U-Ms College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (specifically with faculty in the Departments of Political Science, Sociology, Economics, History, Asian Languages and Cultures, Communications, Germanic Languages and Literatures, Modern Greek, Near Eastern Studies, Romance Languages and Literatures, and Slavic Languages and Literatures); the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy; the International Institute and its various area studies centers, most prominently with the Center for European Studies (CES) and the Center for Russian and East European Studies (CREES); the Institute for Social Research; the Law School; the Stephen M. Ross School of Business; the School of Music; and the William Davidson Institute (affiliated with the Stephen M. Ross School of Business).

In addition, EUC-MI will develop projects in partnership with universities and scholarly institutions in the European Union and accession countries. These include: the Central European University, Budapest; Gazi University, Ankara; the University of Helsinki and its Aleksanteri Institut; Sciences Po, Paris; and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) representing all universities in the Netherlands.
