This scene from the park-like campus of Tsinghua University highlights higher education, an old tradition which is newly open to many Chinese as access to colleges and universities quickly expands for the growing upper and middle classes. Tsinghua was founded in Beijing in 1911, serves nearly 32,000 students, and is sometimes called “China’s MIT.” Current President of the People’s Republic of China, Hu Jintao, is one of the institution’s most notable alumni.
