Note: Last date to apply for Temporary Accomodation and Airport Pickups - July 31st noon (IST)
ISA tries to help students coming to Ann Arbor for the first time, by making arrangements to pick them up at the airport and transport them to their destination in Ann Arbor.
The nearest airport to Ann Arbor is the Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW). It is approximately a 30 minute drive from Ann Arbor. If your journey originates within the United States, you can also reach Ann Arbor by train (Amtrak) or bus (Greyhound). We will try to make arrangements to pick you up from any of the three locations. To increase the chances of someone being available to pick you up, you should try to reach Ann Arbor on a weekend. If you wish to be picked up, you should inform ISA as soon as your plans are finalised. If you are arriving before September 2008, please write to Gauri Jog/Aalap Doshi at isa.umich@gmail.com.
An amount of $20/- will have to be paid by those being picked up from the Detroit Metro Airport, towards parking and fuel expenses borne by the person doing the pickup.
To request an airport pickup, please fill this form . We will get back to you as soon as possible with the contact details of the person picking you up.
In case we are not able to arrange a pick-up for you, we suggest the following alternate modes of transport from the Detroit Airport to Ann Arbor:
Cab Service
The Cabs are referred to as "Detroit Metro Airport Taxicabs". The rate for a one-way trip to Ann Arbor is usually $50 plus tips (usually $5). The Cabs drop you off at your doorstep. There are also various other cabs which stand right outside the terminal. Incase you are not able to find them, just ask someone for directions. ISA cannot help you with this. You can just get a cab from the airport.
Airport Shuttle
If ISA cannot arrange for someone to pick you from the airport, we will arrange an aiport shuttle for you. This usually costs $35/person. If there are 3-4 of you coming together, this charge will be approximately $60 for all together.
Maps and Directions
The following driving directions (with maps) from the airport to the Michigan Union (the international center) and Willowtree Apartments (where many engineering graduate students reside) will be useful. You can print these directions and give them to the Cab driver. (He will understand the directions even if you don't).
The following maps may also be useful if you reach Ann Arbor by train (Amtrak) or bus (Greyhound), OR for getting around the city during your first few days. (Requires Acrobat Reader 4.0)
- North Campus and Central Campus locations
- U of M bus (Northwood) route (shows Central and North Campuses)
In case you are facing difficulties in getting transport from the airport or after arriving at the international center, feel free to call us. Pay phones are readily available at the airport. You can communicate with the person who is going to pick you up regarding meeting each other at the airport. If you are being picked up by a shuttle, you do not need to contact anyone.
