For this project, we will contemplate the notion of "Germany: Land of Poets and Thinkers" through a combined study of theater and the arts as markers of their time with a primary focus on artists and writers whom the Nazis dubbed "degenerate" artists. Using the lens of our own experience drawing, painting, writing, and doing theater exercises in urban and rural settings, we will explore the intersection of arts, history and culture. We will reflect on the role the arts play in identity and expression and we will look at what drives and inspires Germans today to present old works and the past in new ways. Our work and reflections will be captured in students' individual journals and in a collaborative art journal.

The course is open to all undergraduates who are interested in visual arts, writing, and performing arts.* Students interested in this course and in the study trip to Munich are not required to have previous experience in fine arts or theater, but they must have a strong interest in German art, culture and history and they must be open to learning through research, as well as, arts and theater workshops.

Participants will be encouraged to play an active role in fundraising activities in Fall and Winter to lower trip costs. For further information and updates, contact the program director (jshie@umich.edu) and visit http://www.umich.edu/~jshie/Munich12.html

A maximum of 12 students may participate in this highly competitive program.
