Sisterhood

Generally
What is aKDPhi without sisterhood? What is SORORITY life without sisterhood? The answer is nothing. Sisterhood is the foundation with which we have built our chapter on. For all of us, alpha Kappa Delta Phi has become our second home and it is because of that bond, that we can call ourselves a genuine sisterhood. Every minute spent together, whether working, in business, or hanging out, is just another chance for us to grow closer. Separate from our everyday lives, we host a variety of sisterhood events to set aside time to just spend time with one another without thinking about the stresses of school and studying.

Sisterhood

Regionally

There are currently 7 chapters within the Midwest Region. During the course of one school year, we hold a variety of annual sisterhood retreats and conferences where everybody in the region gathers together for a weekend of activities and fun. Our annual Fall and Winter events are known as the Midwest Sisterhood Rally and Midwest Sisterhood Conference, respectively, and are hosted by different chapters every semester. Regionally, sisters attend one another's sisterhood, service, cultural, and academic events.

Sisterhood

Internationally

There are currently 47 chapters nationwide, stretching from the West Coast, Southwest, Midwest, across to the East Coast, and even over the border into Canada — making us the largest, and most geographically diversified, Asian American sorority nationally and internationally. One of the greatest part about being an aKDPhi sister is being able to visit other cities and states and know that you will be taken care of by your fellow sisters there. During Memorial Weekend of every year, aKDPhi hosts our annual convention held at a different chapter. 2005 was hosted by Houston, TX; 2006 was hosted in Irvine, CA; 2007 was hosted in San Jose, CA; 2008 was hosted in Chicago, IL by University of Michigan; 2009 was hosted in Seattle, WA; and 2010 was hosted in San Francisco, CA. Apart from our annual convention, there are other annual events that are hosted throughout the nation that we take part in. As sisters of this sorority, we are so proud and honored to be a part of such a time old tradition and sorority as alpha Kappa Delta Phi. The opportunities for networking and friendships are endless.

Scholarship

Since its initiation at University of Michigan, the sisters of alpha Kappa Delta Phi have strived to maintain high academic excellence. Many of our sisters have been honored with academic scholarships from both inside and outside of the university. We maintain one of the highest levels of quality and integrity and continually stress the importance of our academic studies. Our academic chair monitors the GPAs of all of the active sisters and maintains study hours for sisters to attend in groups to ensure academic merit. One of the many goals of alpha Kappa Delta Phi is to promote the development of a successful woman. In many ways, we are able to develop stronger characters to be able to stand up for ourselves as Asian American women in this society. Through the resources of our alumnae and active sisters, we are able to do just that. It is such a joy to see sisters grow and mature every year into the beautiful women they are today. (If you are interested in co-hosting an academic event or having us attend yours, please contact our academic chair.)

Leadership

The sisters of University of Michigan alpha Kappa Delta Phi wholly encourage and promote leadership in our university and community. Providing leadership opportunities and experiences enhances the sorority and teaches our sisters many important life–long skills. Many of our sisters hold executive board positions of many organizations including, but not limited to:

- Multicultural Greek Council (MCG)
- Rutgers University Hall Association/Government (RUHA)
- United Asian American Orgnization
- Chinese Student Association (CSA)
- Taiwan Student Association (TWSA)
- Filipino Student Association (FASA)
- Yuri Kochiyama Peer Mentor Program
- Asian American Association (AAA)
- University of Michigan Solar Car Team

As sisters of alpha Kappa Delta Phi, we've developed an attitude of confidence, guidance, and direction that have aided us in our endeavors. Many sisters have found that their involvement in alpha Kappa Delta Phi has opened their eyes to the vast leadership opportunities in other cultural, professional, and hobby-oriented organizations and clubs. It is because of our personal interests, as well as our love for the Rutgers University student body, that we encourage all of our sisters to join other organizations and to get involved with the university and community, outside of alpha Kappa Delta Phi.

Breast Cancer Awareness

National Philanthropy

This year, more than 211,300 women in the United States will learn for the first time that they have breast cancer, and more than 39,800 women will lose their lives. Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women in America; however, early detection and prompt treatment can significantly reduce the suffering and deaths caused by this disease. alpha Kappa Delta Phi, the largest nationwide Asian–American interest sorority, proudly promotes our National Philanthropy — Breast Cancer Awareness, a project which is dedicated to increasing public knowledge about the early detection of breast cancer. alpha Kappa Delta Phi at the University of Michigan holds an annual Think Pink! Food Festival and Think Pink Boob Cookie Day in October and donates all its proceeds to the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade, whom we have an exclusive partnership with. Last year, we raised over $1500 for the foundation through the food festival and our after party.

Avon Breast Cancer Crusade

The Avon Breast Cancer Crusade raises funds and awareness for breast cancer research and to advance access to care, with a focus on the medically underserved. From its launch in 1992, Avon's Global Breast Cancer Crusade has expanded to more than 55 countries and by the end of 2009 had raised and awarded more than $640 million. Grants are made in five areas: breast cancer education and awareness, screening and diagnosis, access to treatment, support services and scientific research. The largest source of funds for the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade is the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

The Avon Walks are non–competitive weekend fundraising walks for all fitness levels. Since the launch of the series in 2003, more than $320 million has been raised through the dedication of over 120,000 participating women and men. The Walks take place in 9 cities, covering 39 miles in two days, and raise awareness and funds to fight breast cancer.

Progress has been made but there is still a new diagnosis of breast cancer in the U.S. every 3 minutes. The Avon Foundation for Women supports research to accelerate knowledge about the causes, diagnosis, treatments, and ways to prevent breast cancer. It works to facilitate research collaborations and to identify and fund new research directions. The Foundation also supports efforts to ensure the best quality of care for all, regardless of insurance status or ability to pay.

Additionally

Aside from all of our philanthropy work for Breast Cancer Awareness, the sisters of alpha Kappa Delta Phi strive to serve the community to the best of our abilities by participating in a number of community service activities such as:

- Knitwits
- Girls on the Run
- Ronald McDonald House
- Festifools
- Kid's Fair
- Goodness Day
- OneMichigan
- University of Michigan Dance Marathon (UMDM)
- smORG Carnival
- Relay for Life

Each year we strive to increase the number of community service events that we are involved in. It is the belief of all of the sisters at University of Michigan alpha Kappa Delta Phi that we reach out a little every day and continue to take the necessary steps in improving the community.
(If you are interested in co-hosting or having us participate or attend your service event, please contact our Vice President of Service.)

Asian Awareness

On the University of Michigan campus, the sisters of aKDPhi, are actively involved and hold executive positions with such organizations as United Asian American Organization (UAAO), Chinese Student Association (CSA), Chinese Scholars Student Association (CSSA), Korean Student Association (KSA), Taiwan Student Association (TWSA), Taiwanese American Students Association (TASA), Filipino Student Association (FASA), Vietnamese Student Association (VSA), Asian American Association (AAA), and the YK Peer Mentor Program.

Asian American Awareness is one of our top missions as a sorority. Every year, we continue to support and dedicate our time to helping fellow organizations in their endeavor to do the same. Our Vice President of External Affairs is updated weekly by the different organizations to new events and programs that they have for the month. She thus relays the message to the chapter, and we try as hard as we can to make it out to support each and every event hosted by different Asian American organizations. It is not only a pleasure, but an honor, to see Asian American students uniting in such large numbers year after year. (If you are interested in co-hosting an event with us, please contact our Vice President of External Affairs.)
