Analytic Summary
Schematic of a general PEBBLE nanosensor along with three most common matrix materials and options. PEBBLE sizes can range from 20 to 200 nm in diameter.
Probes Encapsulated By Biologically Localized Embedding (PEBBLEs) are isolated nanoscale devices for intracellular chemical analysis. This schematic shows a generalized view of an ideal PEBBLE with many options for encapsulated constituents. Three different matrices are commonly used depending on the sensor materials. The diagram on the right shows the common combinations using these materials. In the examples that follow, it will become clear how this technology allows us to probe the nanoscale chemical and biological world.
