Things about the LRC for You to Know and Remember!
- Coordinators will probably make most of your reservations but you should always double check to make sure everything is taken care of or whether you should be doing something to prepare;
- Test equipment before class (that includes CD players, carts, classroom equipment, etc.)
- Ask 2009 for training and/or demo, if you aren’t entirely confident with equipment
- Don’t assume availability, even if advanced reservations aren’t required;
- DVD’s come with different encoding, because film distributors are always trying to limit access (and thus, make money) – this means a DVD might work differently on different machines; test in advance, talk to 2009 staff, let them know if there are problems;
- LRC staff members work with your coordinators to put all audio materials on the course CTools site; if there are problems or you need help, email LRC.Audio@umich.edu, call Phill Cameron (615-6526) or ask for help at front desk;
- Ask in 2009 or at the Front Desk if you would like assistance and hands-on practice with any of your course related materials, media, software, equipment, etc.
- The LRC is obligated to follow University Lawyers on legal use of materials; if we seem to be harsh, we are only are doing our jobs -- we’re not doing it to be mean. We will, however, do our best to help everyone have easy Fair Use access to all instructional materials;
- The LRC Media Library and Catalogues are on-line from our website www.umich.edu/~langres ; from there you can search for and locate specific items; if you have questions about the collections or circulation policies, speak with the 2009 staff or with Julie Evershed in 2012.
- Please be sure to return equipment and materials back to 2009 on time; keep in mind there are only 10minutes between classes and a lot of classes (this also applies to letting the next class into your classroom when you end at the top of the hour);
- Students and Computer Based Presentations/Projects:
- You, as instructor, will need to the reserve computer cart for student presentations and will take responsibility for it’s successful operation [n.b. if your coordinator has presentations scheduled, we’ll work with your coordinator to organize training events]; The other option is for the students to make reservations through LSA Media in Mason Hall.
- Make sure you stress how the students are to turn projects in; will anything go? Flashdrives, phone logs, various sizes of diskettes, even mini-disks and zip disks? Talk to your coordinator about this if you aren’t sure.
- Alcoves: sign up now for Office Hours and Computers – see the 2009 staff, before slots fill up;
- There are lots of useful supplies in the LRC Vending Machines – pens, pins, media, candies, envelopes with stamps -- all at cost;
Satellite TV: the LRC subscribes to over 60 foreign television channels in many different languages which can be viewed on campus:
- At most stations in the Main Center -- please ask the students at the front desk to assist you, if you need help.
- Live in the VVR – please ask the 2009 staff to assist you
- Recorded on videotape or DVD – please talk with Ann in 2014 to arrange this
- Streamed live via multicast in Quicktime 7 (currently only available on a Mac; beta version available for personal desktop computers, but not yet available in public centers) – n.b. this is a pilot project, so only 3 channels are available at a time; also this service requires the appropriate network infrastructure be in place… some campus buildings may not yet have been upgraded.

Be sure to tell your students…
- Your Name!! – Have them practice your name! We have students asking, “Do you know where my instructor is?” But they don’t know the instructor’s name.
- If a class session is being held in the LRC, tell them which classroom (Mac, PC, VVR); it cuts down on confusion and greatly assists our staff.
- Go to CTools site first for general course information and audio materials (and in some cases video).
- Audio materials are on the CTools site, so students can listen on the computer via the site; BUT those materials are also available in the LRC on CD and/or cassette (some for purchase, but all for home use via the 24-hour request service [supply own raw stock or purchase])
- If CTools site down or students can’t access the materials on-line, the LRC will have copies for use in the Main Center.
- Students Should Go to Front Desk inside the LRC Main Center with Questions
- Students at Front Desk can help with all kinds of things, not just the obvious check-in/check-out stuff.
- Most Books and Audio and Video and CDRoms are on reserve in LRC
- If the bookstore is out of books, or if they aren’t sure they will stay in the class and thus don’t want to invest in the books, PHOTOCOPY necessary pages from the LRC
- Lots of Other Study Materials are Available in the LRC – learning strategies, dictionaries, grammars, other textbooks, self-study materials [most with answer keys and self-quizzes so they can test themselves!]
- The LRC also has lots of fun Enrichment Materials – books, magazines, pleasure reading materials
- The LRC is also the place to meet and work with friends and hang out between classes – and, yes, food and drinks are allowed!!
- They can pick up lots of neat supplies from LRC Vending Machines – pens, pins, media, foreign candies, envelopes with stamps -- all at cost!
FUN things you can do in the LRC and with LRC assistance:
- Pizza Review Sessions in the LRC
- Project Showcase and Poster Sessions
- Student Presentations and Skits via Video Productions
- Live Call-In Review Sessions on Campus Cable
- Video Conference with Friends and Other Students
- Create a Student Bulletin Boarding Honoring Best Week and Best Students
- Reserve the VVR for Live Satellite Television Events (private events only, not those open to the public or advertised!)
- You suggest it, we’ll give it a whirl!!!
What we need you to do…
- Let us know right away when there is a problem!
- Remind us of your names!! (And please don’t be offended if we ask you for your name… there are a lot of new people to get to know!)
- Help us make this the best, most positive, most effective, and most successful experience!
Enjoy the LRC!
