ITCS Exchange Mobile Device Support

Exchange connectivity is available for many smart phones and wireless devices. Most commonly, these devices support over the air two way synchronization of at least e-mail and calendar items. Some offer more or less. Some platforms have native support and are free; others require additional components and servers and may have a fee attached to them.

Support for connectivity of these devices is categorized by platform OS and connectivity software rather than by device or wireless carrier. In each category, there are dozens of vendors, models and wireless carrier options.

See Resources for MOBILE DEVICE Users for documentation on configuring and using mobile devices with Exchange, and the security settings that are implemented with the service.

Exchange ActiveSync

Exchange Active Sync is part of Exchange Server and is natively supported by Windows Mobile devices such as Pocket PC Phones, Pocket PCs and some Palm devices. It requires no additional hardware or administration on the backend and no additional license fees.

BlackBerry Enterprise Service for Exchange

ITCS provides BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) service for Exchange. E-mail, calendar, and contacts can be synced with a BlackBerry device through this service from an Exchange mailbox on the ITCS Exchange servers or the Ross School (School of Business) Exchange server.

Requirements

  • Current Version: The BlackBerry must be using version 4.2.2 or later for full functionality.

  • Enterprise Plan: The service plan must include an Enterprise—also known as Corporate or Business—plan.

  • Exchange Mailbox: The user must have an Exchange mailbox with either the ITCS Exchange service or the Ross School Exchange service.

How to Order

Use the BlackBerry Enterprise Service form to request an account. You will need to provide the user's name and uniqname, the department to bill, and the shortcode to charge. The user will receive an activation password via e-mail, at the uniqname you provide.

Cost

  • License: $60. This is a one-time cost per license, billed the first month of service. A department can transfer a license from one user to another. ITCS tracks the licenses purchased by a department and only charges a new license fee if there is none available in the departmental pool when service is requested for a new user.

  • Service: $13.50 per account per month. This is billed monthly until the account is cancelled.

Documentation

See BlackBerry and the ITCS Exchange Service to learn how to configure the BlackBerry for the service, how to use the basics of the service, and, most importantly, how the security settings work.

Support

If necessary, you can request device reactivations using the BlackBerry Enterprise Service form. Users can receive help with setup and use of Exchange on their BlackBerry phones by calling 764-HELP.

IMAP

Exchange supports any kind of secure IMAP client for access to Exchange e-mail only. Support for IMAP clients on mobile devices is the same as the support for computer clients - limited to providing the back-end service. A very popular client is Chatteremail.
