University of Michigan ITCS Windows Forest

This section provides an overview of the Windows Active Directory environment at the U-M. It contains pointers to resources of general interest to Windows campus administrators and users.

Several Windows/Active Directory (AD) forests are currently in use at U-M. This web site describes the Windows/AD forest that is sponsored and centrally administered by the Information Technology Central Services (ITCS). For brevity, references to the "U-M Windows forest" — or to the "UMROOT forest" — will refer to the U-M ITCS Windows forest.

The U-M Windows forest is a university-wide collection of domains that are connected by trust relationships, and share a common store of information, the Active Directory. Each Windows domain maintains a separate namespace, yet resources can be shared throughout the forest because of the trust relationships connecting the domains.

ITCS Services

ITCS provides or coordinates several Windows-based services for campus departments. Among these are Windows/Active Directory Infrastructure support, automatic population of Active Directory, Windows Update Service, and Exchange e-mail
