UMROOT Forest Resources
The UMROOT Forest provides the basis for the use of various Windows and Active Directory resources at the University of Michigan. In some cases, this is provided in the forest for general use. In others, the infrastructure to use these capabilities exist in the forest, and the campus unit wishing to take advantage of it may do so by providing their own service. Information about these resources and how to take advantage of them are provided via the links below.
Exchange
The infrastructure necessary to support Exchange in the campus forest has been implemented. This page tells you more.
DNS
You can find information on how DNS is configured in the campus forest and how to use it in your environment here.
DHCP
Campus units may run Windows DHCP services in the forest environment. In order to do so, they must be authorized.
WINS
Although DNS plays a prominent role in Windows, a number of important, commonly-used Windows functions still rely on the WINS browsing model. This section describees how to participate in and use the WINS services on campus.
PKI
Windows Active Directory offers PKI certificate services. This page describes the PKI impmementation in the campus forest and how it integrates with broader campus PKI initiatives.
DFS
The Windows forest environment offers a location-independent file structure called Distributed File System (DFS). This is similar to the Unix-based AFS that is familiar on campus. The DFS root is provided in the campus forest and units may choose to link their departmental file systems into this root. This page provides some DFS basics to get you started in the campus environment.
Terminal Services
Terminal Services licensing is provided in the campus forest by ITCS. This page explains how that licensing works and how to use it for your terminal services application servers.
IIS, SQL and Messaging Services
This link provides information on providing these services in a secure way in the campus environment.
