Windows 2003 Terminal Server Licensing

The UMROOT Forest maintains redundant Terminal Server Licensing Servers (TSLS) for use by any Windows 2000 or 2003 Terminal Servers in the UMROOT Forest that are running in "Application Mode". When properly configured, your Terminal Servers will automatically discover these license servers and obtain the needed licenses. TS Servers running in "Administration Mode" do not need to be licensed.

For Windows 2003 Terminal Servers, you need to change the Licensing Type from Per-Device to Per-User because we only have Per-User licenses on our TSLS. No other configuration is needed.

On your Windows 2003 Terminal Server:

  • Go to Administrative tools and launch the 'Terminal Services Configuration' snap-in
  • Under "Server settings" double-click on "Licensing" and change it from per-device to per-user.
For more information, go to The Function of Terminal Server CALs in Windows Server 2003 in Microsoft's KnowledgeBase.
