Class Listserv Request Form

Information Technology Central Services (ITCS) provides a list service for for instructors. We create, by request, course section e-mail groups (called "class listservs" or "classlists") using registration data from the Registrar's Office.

The class listserv that ITCS sets up for you has an entry in the Online Campus Directory, while the actual list with your students' names is contained in a listserv. This configuration offers the convenience of an "@umich.edu" address for your class listserv and the privacy associated with a listserv.

Discussion E-Mail groups

"Discussion" class listservs allow anyone who is a member of the list--usually instructors and students--to send e-mail to the listserv; non-members are prohibited from sending email to the listserv, and so unwanted, unsolicited e-mail is thwarted. Discussion listservs are easily converted to "anouncement-only" lists should the need arise.

Announcement-Only E-Mail groups

Announcement-only lists allow only the list owners--usually the instructor--to send e-mail to the listserv; other members--usually students--are not allowed send messages to these "announcement-only" lists. Announcement-only listservs are easily converted to "discussion" lists later on.

Do you need a file containing information about your students? This is a "class roster"--files that are provided by Michigan Administrative Information Services (MAIS), the unit responsbile for all M-Pathways systems. These files, suitable for using with a spreadsheet program have traditionally been called "class lists", but to limit confusion with class listservs, the files are now being called "class rosters." Classlist Updates Classlists are updated several times a day, so that classlist membership reflects the most current state of a class section's enrollment. Drops or adds are evidenced in the classlist membership within a few hours of their entry into the registration system. If you believe that your classlist membership is incorrect, please send a message to itcs-listmaster@umich.edu. Be sure to include the exact name of your list and the uniqnames of any students who should or should not be in your classlist.
