Help and Documentation

  • linuxdoc.org - This is the home of the Linux Documentation Project (LDP). Here you will find tons of guides, FAQs, HOWTOs, and man pages. If you have a question about anything linux, this is a good place to start.

  • linuxnewbie.org - Here you will find a lot of help and information contributed by many people. First of, visit the Newbie Help Files (NHF) section of the page, where you will find many guides written in plain English for accomplishing many important (and sometimes more advanced) tasks. Once you've done that, check out the discussion forum. This is the biggest Linux discussion forum on the nest. You're bound to find an answer to your questions here.

  • google.com - If all else fails, or for some people where it all begins, try searching google. This search engine is very powerful and will most likely find exactly what you're looking for (given that the answer exists somewhere, of course). You can provide a general subject or a specific phrase (driver name, chipset, etc.) and see what it finds for you. 9 times out of 10 it's exactly what you've been looking for.

Software

  • freshmeat.net - This is the only page you really need to know about in order to find Linux software. It is a huge, searchable database of programs that includes descriptions, links, and user comments for each. The main page is a listing of the most recent additions/updates to the database, so you can always stay up to date with the newest version of your favorite programs.

  • rpmfind.net - For those of you who prefer RPM packages, this is the page for you. You can find almost any RPM here, grouped by name, category, or date. The database is huge, but it's pretty complete.

Hardware

  • Linux Hardware Database - This is a database of various hardware that has been reported to work (or not work) with Linux. You can find information about the driver you should use, how well it works, and links to other reading material that might help you out in the process.
