The Cultural Crusades:

War and Cultural Exchange Between The Christian and Islamic Worlds

Welcome to the world of the Great Crusades! This site presents information about these religious wars in the Holy Land from the vantage points of both the European and Arab participants. While these wars brought military confrontation and destruction, they also brought the cultures of Christian Europe and the Islamic East together, and the result is a rich and intriguing cultural exchange.

"Cultural Crusades" covers the era of the Great Crusades, beginning in 1095, when Pope Urban called for the First Crusade, and ending in 1291, when Sultan Khalil regained control of Acre. Here you can find information on topics including art, music, weapons and warfare, and the role of women. The exchange of ideas and technologies that resulted from the seven religious wars is the concept underlying each of the articles.
