About Hsueh-Tze

Hsueh-tze has danced and studied tango extensively in Buenos Aires, and teaches tango in Boston and across the country. A life-long dancer, Hsueh-tze began dancing tango in 1989, and is a pioneer in North America in dancing both the leader's and follower's role.

In her classes, she integrates her knowledge of dance, physiology and biomechanics to focus on movement dynamics, partner communication, musicality and improvisation. Hsueh-tze is nationally recognized as a pre-eminent teacher of close embrace tango, the popular social form of tango of Buenos Aires and experienced communities around the world.

Hsueh-tze holds a doctorate in physiology from Harvard University, and won a teaching award as a Harvard Teaching Fellow.

Friday, November 21; Room 2000 Chemistry Building

  • Check in and warm up; 7:30pm - 8:00pm

  • Secrets of Close Embrace and Dancing the Music; 8:00pm - 10:00pm
    Find creative ways to express yourself to the music by dancing to the melody or the rhythm. Dance the melody while your partner dances the rhythm, or vice versa. Musical Embellishments.

  • Practica; 10:00pm - 11:30pm

Saturday, November 22; Room 2000 Chemistry Building

  • Check in and warm up; 1:30pm - 2:00pm

  • Syncopating the Vals; 2:00pm - 3:30pm
    Having fun with the syncopations in the vals!

  • Turns in Close Embrace; 3:45pm - 5:15pm
    An introduction to turns in close embrace (beyond the rock-step turn). Various turns close-up.

Sunday, November 23; Room 2000 Chemistry Building

  • Check in and warm up; 2:30pm - 3:00pm

  • Bandoneon-Like Moves; 3:00pm - 4:30pm
    Expanding, contracting; Ochos in place; Taking a move and expanding it. Come and discover a move that has magical qualities.

  • Single Axis Turns in Close Embrace; 4:45pm - 6:15pm
    Turning on the spot, while sharing the same axis with your partner. Go for a ride with fast turns on the spot!

  • Practica; 6:30pm - 8:00pm

Which workshop should I take?

We will keep all the workshops open for dancers of all levels. To help you choose the workshops which will be the most beneficial for you, we have listed recommended experience for the different workshop days in the table below.

Please register online. We will not accept email or phone reservations!

Due to the size of the room, enrollment in each workshop is LIMITED to 50. As we process registrants on a first-come-first-serve basis, enrolling well in advance will assure you a spot in the workshops and save you money as well (see prices below). It will also give the organizers ample time to handle your requests (we appreciate your early enrollment greatly!).


Workshop Prices

Early registration prices (postmarked on or before November 19)

  • One workshop day: $15 (students) / $25 (non-students)
  • Two workshop days: $25 (students) / $45 (non-students)
  • Three workshop days: $30 (students) / $55 (non-students)

Late OR at-the-door registration (postmarked after November 19)

  • One workshop day: $25 (students) / $45 (non-students)
  • Two workshop days: $35 (students) / $65 (non-students)
  • Three workshop days: $40 (students) / $75 (non-students)

Milonga Prices

You must either be a semester milonga pass holder ($10 students / $20 non-students) or pay the drop-in price at the door ($5 students / $10 non-students).

From Interstate-94, take State Street Exit 177. Go north - continue on State Street approximately 2 miles to the main campus area. Angell Hall is the big building with a facade of huge columns, on the east side of S.State Street.

Free covered parking at specified times on weekends and evenings (please see signage on structure) is available in Thompson Street Parking structure which is right behind the Michigan Union. Thompson street is parallel to and one block west of State St.
