In this 8 week series, our instructors will build on the vocabulary taught in the beginner series and more challenging elements/concepts of tango will be introduced. As always, connection, rhythm, musicality and navigation will be emphasized.

The advanced-beginner series is actually offered in two different, alternating versions. Students are strongly advised to take the advanced-beginner series two times so that they can experience both versions. The material in both versions is important and lays the foundation for advanced tango.

Version A

  • Posture, embrace, connection and walking
  • Review walking in cross-system: ways of getting in and out of back ochos
  • Ochos in a circle- Over-turned ochos
  • Cruzada (cross) from parallel and cross systems
  • Giro (turn) to the left
  • Vals musicality, giros in vals
  • Musicality: Dancing to different instruments, Phrasing and Pausing, Intro to important tango orchestras
Version B
  • Posture, embrace, connection and walking
  • Review Quick-Quick-Slow Rhythm: walking corridas, rock steps
  • Check step turn to the right, resolving it with an ocho cortado
  • Linear ocho cortado- use of contrabody movement
  • Milonga: Musicality and intro to Traspie
  • Musicality: Dancing to different instruments, Phrasing and Pausing, Intro to important tango orchestras

Students are encouraged to stay after the lesson and dance with the intermediate and advanced dancers during the practica (typically from 9:30-11:30pm). Practica has a more informal and less intimidating atmosphere than the milonga. This is a good opportunity to work on your dance skills and get/give help from/to others. Dancing with more people will help improve your dancing much faster than dancing with the same person.

It is expected that the students of this class attend the milongas periodically or on regular basis to apply what has been learned in the class in the milonga setting.

Special requirement: comfortable leather-soled shoes (they don't have to be tango shoes).
