New Sculpture is a “Work of Heart”

sculpture MCB’s newest art work, a statue by Edwina Jaques Jones ’70, ‘75 was dedicated to “All Cookies, past, present, and future” at a brief ceremony that capped off the 90th anniversary celebration.

Catherine Walsh Davis, chair of the MCB Board of Governors revealed the name of the statue —“Edwina.” Catherine noted that the Governors selected the name in honor of the sculptor and because its meaning, “rich or valuable friend,” represents the relationships between all Cookies.

sculptureLeft: Edwina Jaques Jones talked about her inspiration for the statue: “ I envisioned a statue which would represent the diverse nature of the Martha Cook woman who challenges the University world, bringing a modern outlook to education, yet also celebrates the gentle heart of such a woman and recognizes the womanly arts that bind our past and future."

The sculpture is enclosed in a glass case in the front lobby. Its arms are open in a welcoming gesture to all who enter MCB.
