Inaugural Workshop of the Michigan Center for Theoretical Physics

   November 4-18, 2001

                          Arrival and Information Bulletin

Welcome to the Inaugural workshop of the Michigan Center for Theoretical Physics!

We would like to take this opportunity to provide some additional local workshop information:

Workshop Auditorium

Talks will be held in the physics lecture auditorium, 340 West Hall, the Oskar Klein conference room # 3481 Randall Lab, and possibly the seminar room, 335 West Hall.  Talks will take place anytime from 9:00am – 5:00pm.  Please see “Schedule of Talks” for further details.  Usually notices of locations and last minute scheduling will be posted just outside the theory center’s main office, 3444 Randall Lab.  (Randall Lab and West Hall are joined by a second floor bridge.)

Refreshments will be available in the Oskar Klein Conference room, # 3481 Randall Lab.  Please help yourself at any time!

Supplies are available for your use in the large gray cabinet in the Theory Center’s main office, # 3444 Randall Lab.  Again, help yourself!

Please note that the physics department (West Hall, Randall Laboratory, and New Randall Addition) will be locked after 7:00pm Monday – Friday.  On Sundays doors are left locked all day.  (You will need a building key for access.)

Computing Facilities

While we will try to have terminals available in offices, we are still undergoing some construction and upgrading, so it would be good if some participants brought laptops.  We expect to have a number of Ethernet connections in offices.

There will be one of two areas always available for your use, either in the MCTP computer room or in our department computer room called, P.A.U.L.  The P.A.U.L. room is located on the second floor of Randall Lab, room # 2416 (one floor below the theory group).  There are seven terminals here.  Printers are connected to all of these.  Once logged on, you have access to an Internet browser along with SSH for checking your email.  Please, do NOT use Telnet!  Access to these computers is by password control, which will be given to you upon arrival.

If you have special computing needs related to workshop attendance, such as preparation of transparencies for your talk, please consult the conference secretary.

Accommodations

The rooms being held at the Oxford Conference Center will be released by Nov. 4, 2001.  If you have not made your reservations yet, please do so!

Office Space and keys

If you arrive M-F, between 8-5:30pm, you can go to the Theory Center’s main office to get assigned a desk and get keys.  If you arrive outside these hours, and let us know ahead of time, we will bring an envelope with keys and information to your accommodations so you can get it there upon check-in.

Phones are available in most offices; please minimize long distance calling.

Meals

You are responsible for your own meals.  Ann Arbor has a lively dining scene and is home to many fine restaurants.  For informal meals, there are many coffee shops, bars, and snack shops surrounding central campus.  We have generated a restaurant legend to the local restaurants, and a list of near by places for lunch, and a larger list of all restaurants in walking distance.  Take a look!

Contact Information

Telephone messages to workshop participants may be left at (734) 647-9039.  Messages will be posted on the message board outside the Theory Center’s Main Office, # 3444 Randall.  Similarly, incoming faxes may be sent to (734) 763-2213.  Incoming faxes should include both “CP Violation workshop” and participants name, so that they may be delivered promptly.  If you need to send a fax, please see conference secretary or local organizers.

There are two pay phones and a couple of vending machines on the first floor of West Hall, by the South University entrance.  Vending machines are also available in the Sub Basement (SB) of Randall Lab.  For making calls within the University from a University phone, you only have to dial the last 5 digits.  Dial 9 followed by the seven-digit number to make local calls outside the University, from a University phone.  9 + 1 + the area code + the number, for long distance calls.

Entertainment

The website lists some local events.  A complete calendar of events will be available in the Ann Arbor Observer, of which a copy will be kept in the Theory Main office, and which can be bought in many local convenient stores.

No Smoking

Smoking is prohibited inside all University of Michigan facilities.

Once again, welcome to the Inaugural workshop of the Michigan Center for Theoretical Physics “CP Violation”!
