Cosmology presents a number of technically difficult and conceptually challenging issues that string theory or M-theory must address. Some features of the standard cosmology, such as an initial spacelike singularity, lie outside of the province of general relativity. Others, such as the possibility of a small and positive cosmological constant, appear unnatural and seem to require fine tuning. The study of time-dependent backgrounds in string theory is essential in order to confront these issues, and, despite a great deal of recent work in this area, fundamental questions remain. This workshop will bring together high energy theorists and cosmologists working on time-dependent backgrounds of string theory with the goal of improving our understanding of this important class of solutions.
