Medmoms is a free program offered to all pregnant women. It is designed and run by the schools of nursing, medicine, public health, and social work at the University of Michigan. We offer a variety of services for pregnant women and their families. These services include:
- Providing information on pregnancy and childbirth
- Being a labor/Lamaze coach
- Being an exercise partner
- Attending prenatal visits with the expecting mom
- Helping in the home setting (with other children, errands, chores, etc.)
- Providing information about support services (such as WIC)
- Assisting with stress relief
- Providing overall support and guidance throughout the pregnancy
There is no charge for the services provided by Medmoms. We offer services to all pregnant women, including teenagers, women who are HIV positive, and women who do not speak English. Each mom who participates in the program is guaranteed at least two hours per week with a student while she is pregnant and one follow-up visit after the birth. While we are students in various medical fields, we are not yet licensed professionals; therefore, we do not provide any medical care. What we do provide is support and friendship to interested moms and families.
For interested volunteers, no maternity experience is necessary and the amount of time you put in is flexible. Meet other students from the schools of nursing, social work, public health, medical school, and across the U of M campus.
