Mission
Though the number of minorities in the population has
been rising steadily, relatively few minorities are hired
in a professional capacity in the environmental field. A number
of factors may account for this. The Minority Environmental
Leadership Development Initiative (MELDI) believes that career
and leadership development is an important factor that can
enhance the status of minorities in the environmental field.
Consequently, the project is designed to undertake a series
of activities that includes:
Identifying,
profiling and publicizing senior and up and coming minority
environmental professionals who have had stellar environmental
careers.
Identifying
and profiling exemplary diversity initiatives that are
underway in environmental organizations.
Conducting
research to find out more about the status of minority
environmental professionals and university-level minority
students enrolled in environmental programs.
Hosting
conferences, workshops and other leadership and career
development activities.
Developing
a minority environmental leadership group at the University
of Michigan. The project will also develop
an email group for minority students and environmental
professionals outside of the University of Michigan who
are interested in sharing their experiences in the field
and networking with individuals that share common interests.
Currently,
information about minorities in the environmental field or
diversity efforts are scattered in disparate locations. MELDI
is pulling together information from various sources to make
it easier to find and utilize such information. To this end
MELDI's staff has developed a web site that centralizes and
organizes this information, making it more accessible to larger
numbers of people. This website specifically seeks to:
Provide information on job and internship announcements,
as well as job searching resources such as hiring information,
skills being sought in the field, salaries, and resume-posting
services.
Provide a comprehensive listing of diversity initiatives,
networking opportunities and email groups in existence
that are aimed at increasing the number of minorities
in the environmental field and other sciences. The site
identifies multi-cultural initiatives as well as initiatives
aimed at specific ethnic minority groups.
The project's
website features nation-wide will also post leadership and
career development activities.
Track and post current events -- related to minority leadership
and career development issues -- on the website.
Identify and list environmental professional associations
that students and environmental professionals might consider
participating in. In addition, the site will list a number
of professional associations that might be of interest
to specific ethnic minority groups. There will be a number
of African American, Asian, Latino, and Native American
professional associations listed also.
Offer a listing of fellowship and scholarship opportunities
in the environmental field.
Identify
and list both domestic and international volunteer opportunities
related to the environmental field.
Provide
a listing
of some gender and diversity efforts
that are underway at the University of Michigan and elsewhere.
Centralizing information on minorities in the environmental
field and diversity efforts.
