Development Initative
This page lists a number of diversity iniatives that are underway in the environmental field as well as in other areas of science. The initiatives are grouped into two categories: (a) diversity initiatives that are organized by or focus primarily on minorities (b)other multi-racial diversity initiatives.
Minority Diversity Initiatives in the Environmental Field and Other Sciences
The following diversity initiatives focus primarily on minorities. For the most part, these initiatives are founded, organized and/or led by minorities. These initiatives provide networking opportunities as well as career and leadership opportunities.
- American Indian Science & Engineering Society (AISES

The American Indian Science & Engineering Society (AISES) is a national, non-profit organization that nurtures building of community by bridging science and technology with traditional Native values. Through its educational programs, AISES provides opportunities for American Indians and Native Alaskans to pursue studies in science, engineering, and technology arenas.

This motivational and instructional program brings science to life with the words and images of six contemporary minority and women scientists. It shows scientists as extraordinarily accessible people, thus helping to dispel stereotypical images of scientists.

MiSciNet is a bi-monthly online publication the main goal of which is to provide support to underrepresented minority students pursuing an education and career in science, mathematics, and engineering.
- The National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering

Since 1974, NACME (the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering) has provided leadership and support for the national effort to increase the representation of successful African American, American Indian and Latino women and men in engineering and technology, math- and science-based careers.

A great way for students to get experience is to participate in the Student Career Experience Program (SCEP). The SCEP is collaborative effort between the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and various colleges and universities. Participating students are sent to work for the BLM for a summer, this enables them to apply the theories and skills that they have learned in the classroom to a particular job situation. The SCEP is a beneficial endeavor for the BLM as well because it allows them to develop relationships with educational institutions that will enhance efforts to recruit a diversified workforce. The students in turn gain a hard base of preparation and developmental experience from their work with the BLM. The Environmental Leadership Program seeks to transform public understanding of environmental issues by training and supporting a diverse network of visionary, action-oriented emerging leaders.
- Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Relates Sciences (MANRRS)

MANRRS is a diversity initiative of the Unites States Department of Agriculture that focuses on career development. MANRRS has several chapters on university campuses across the nation and hosts an annual career fair and training conference.

- Women in Engineering Programs & Advocates Network (WEPAN)

WEPAN is a non-profit educational organization founded in 1990. It has a membership of over 600 and is led by a 14-person board of directors from academia and industry. WEPAN's mission is to be a catalyst for change to enhance the success of women in the engineering profession.
