Hadwin’s 6 Spark Victory In Knoxville

Volunteers Keep it Close Until Halftime

Knoxville, Tenn. -- The 2nd ranked Michigan men’s lacrosse team extended their record to 7-1 tonight with a 16-9 win over #13 Tennessee in a driving rainstorm in Knoxville. The Volunteers, who fell to 10-3, had no answer for Jeff Hadwin (Vestal, NY/Vestal HS) who poured in six goals, three in each half, to lead the Wolverines.

Tennessee’s All-American attackman, Jason Lewin, opened the scoring less than 30 seconds after the opening faceoff with a diving shot off a loose ball. Michigan scored the next two, first on a Dave Bernard (Litchfield, CT/Westminster HS) goal, and then All-American defenseman Greg Deutch (Boca Raton, FL/St. Andrews HS) scored his second of the year when he cleared the ball himself and finished with a shot that found the upper corner.

The Vols got back within one, but Michigan rattled off the next two in the final 30 seconds of the quarter to go up 4-2.

Tennessee outscored the Wolverines 3-2 in the second quarter to make the halftime score 6-5. Hadwin had both Michigan goals in the quarter, his 2nd and 3rd of the game.

The Wolverines regrouped at the half and came back out with renewed intensity. Ben Herbst (Pikesville, MD/Pikesville HS) got things started in the first minute, but Tennessee’s Brian Biloski answered to keep it within one.

From there, Michigan ran off four straight before the Vols could score again in the last minute of the quarter, and the score had opened up to 11-7. Tom Burns (Bloomfield, MI/Brother Rice HS) one of Michigan’s three All-American attackmen, went down at the end of the third with an ankle injury that looked serious. He had contributed 2 goals and 2 assists to that point.

In the fourth, the Wolverines continued to pour it on as they put together another 5-2 quarter to put it away. Burns’s replacement, sophomore Sloan Buchan-McGilliard (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer HS), had a hand in 3 of the 5 fourth quarter goals. He totaled 1 goal and 2 assists in 15 minutes of play.

Next up for Michigan is 7th ranked Virginia Tech in a neutral site game in Knoxville. The game will be played Sunday at noon.

QUOTES
UM Head Coach John Paul
On Playing Conditions…”Tennessee’s field is a tough place to play. It’s old turf, and the lines are very hard to see. There’s nothing wrong with home field advantage, though. We certainly enjoy it in Oosterbaan (Fieldhouse). The rain tonight was tough, though. I thought we did a pretty good job handling adverse conditions, although Tommy’s (Burns) injury was certainly due to the wet turf.”

On the Injury to Tom Burns…”We took him to the hospital for X-Rays, but fortunately it’s just a bad ankle sprain. At first, the trainers thought it might be broken. It’s good news, but it’s bad timing. I’m not sure if we’ll have him back next week for BYU.”
