Win Keeps Michigan Perfect In CCLA
Ann Arbor,
Mich. -- The #2 Michigan Wolverines might have had a letdown coming
after their emotional win last week over #3 Brigham Young. That letdown came
quickly, as #24 Marquette gave them all they could handle tonight. Jeff
Hadwin (Vestal, NY/Vestal HS) led Michigan with 4 goals and Ben
Herbst (Pikesville, MD/Pikesville HS) added 3 goals and 2 assists, as
the Wolverines came away with a 13-10 victory. The win improved Michigan to
12-1 overall and 5-0 in the CCLA. Marquette suffered their first defeat of
the year, falling to 7-1 (5-1 CCLA).
Michigan took the early lead less than two minutes into the game when
Sloan Buchan-McGilliard (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer HS) found a cutting
Kevin Toller (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer HS), and the former high school
teammates made it 1-0. For the rest of quarter the Wolverines possessed the
ball much of the time, but could not seem to find quality shots until the
4:04 mark when Eric DeLamarter (Concord, MA/Concord-Carlisle HS) beat
his man and rifled one home to make it 2-0.
Marquette seemed to get into the flow at the point, as the Golden
Eagles outhustled the Wolverines for the next several minutes, scoring first
with 2:54 to go, and then tying it up as the buzzer sounded with a Tom
Gizynski bounce shot.
Herbst put the Wolverines back on top with a man-up goal early in
the second, but the Golden Eagles answered with an extra-man goal of their
own to tie it back up at 3. Michigan scored the next three, including two in
a twenty second span, but just as the game seemed to be getting out of
reach, Marquette came back with a pair of their own before the half ended.
At halftime, the score was 6-5 Michigan.
The third quarter was a busy one for the officials as a total of
nine penalties were called, six of them on Michigan. Marquette was able to
capitalize on 3 of 4 extra-man opportunities, including two chances when
they were up two men. In fact, at the 8:32 mark, the Golden Eagles took the
lead 7-6 when they scored their second man-up goal of the quarter. Michigan
answered with a Micah Veith (Oak Park, IL/Oak Park River Forest HS)
goal and a pair of Hadwin tallies to retake the lead. Herbst scored his
third of the game to make it 10-7, but Matt Murphy scored Marquette’s third
extra-man goal of the quarter to narrow the gap to two again. Hadwin scored
his fourth of the game with 26 seconds to go back up by three.
Dave Bernard (Litchfield, CT/Westminster HS) had a hand
in both Michigan goals in the fourth to put the game away. First he sent a
blistering shot past Marquette goalie Andy Gorski halfway through the
quarter, and then with 2:21 to go he found Kevin Chan (Manhasset,
NY/Manhasset HS) all alone in transition. Chan buried his shot, and Michigan
had a comfortable 13-8 lead and just over to two minutes on the clock.
Marquette made a run at the end, scoring two goals in the last two
minutes to bring the margin back to 3, but it was too much ground to cover
in too little time, and the clock ran out with the score 13-10.
Next up for Michigan is a visit to Oakland University tomorrow
afternoon at 1:00 p.m. for their final CCLA game of the year. Next week the
Wolverines host #11 Colorado to finish the regular season.
NOTES
• Marquette is only the third team this year to score double digits against
Michigan. The Wolverines have held their opponents to a 7.00 goals per game
average through the 2001 season.
• Tom Burns sat out his fourth consecutive game with an ankle injury. He
will miss tomorrow’s game against Oakland as well. He should return next
week against Colorado.
• Jeff Hadwin’s 4 goals added to his Michigan career record (since the
inception of the USLIA) 238.
QUOTES
UM Head Coach John Paul
On the team’s effort…”It’s tough not to let down a bit after the kind
of game we had last week, but it’s still discouraging. We need to be peaking
at this time of year, not regressing. It wasn’t just that we didn’t have the
intensity tonight; we did not play very smart, either. We really need to
come out much better tomorrow against Oakland.”
On tomorrow’s game against Oakland…”Oakland is a similar team to the
Marquette team we played tonight. They have skilled players, and they are
well coached. We will be playing at their place, which may be good for us.
We need to get out of our comfort zone after tonight and find something to
kick-start us again.”
On the defense…”We did such a nice job Saturday against BYU, but
tonight we just seemed a step slow. Our slides were late, and we were losing
cutters. This is not a film the guys are going to enjoy watching.”
